Guide to Basic Pave Stone Installation
Step 1: Prepare the base
- For patio and walkway applications: Roto-till portland cement into existing soil (94 lbs per 30 sq. ft.)
- For driveway applications: Use 4-6" finely crushed stone on compacted soil
Step 2: Install Edge Restraint
- Establish perimeters of project
- Install pavestone edging using 12" spikes
Step 3: Screed Sand
- Shovel pavestone sand or sharp, coarse, granular sand between two pieces of 1" (outside dimension) conduit pipes
- Use 2x4 to screed and level sand
Step 4: Laying Stone
- Create custom patters by combining various shapes and colors of stone
- Start in a square corner and work out in a triangular direction
- Lay each stone next to previously placed stone and slide it straight down
Step 5: Compaction
- Compact pavestones firmly into previously leveled sand
- Fill joints by sweeping pavestone sand into gaps
- Compact the surface one more pass to complete lockup
